General Worker: Stores (Main Pharmacy Stores)

Requirements:

Minimum Educational Qualification: Basic numeracy and literacy are essential for this role. These fundamental skills are necessary to handle, process, and manage stock effectively, ensuring accurate and efficient inventory control.

Experience: Relevant experience in medical stores is required. This experience is crucial as it provides the necessary knowledge for managing pharmaceutical inventory, understanding storage requirements, and maintaining safety standards. Previous experience in a similar environment will enhance the candidate’s ability to handle medical goods proficiently and respond effectively to any issues that arise.

Inherent Requirement of the Job: Candidates must be capable of managing heavy cartons continuously. This aspect of the role demands significant physical strength and stamina, as moving and handling bulky items is a regular part of the job responsibilities.

  • Good Interpersonal Skills: Effective interaction with colleagues, suppliers, and other hospital staff is crucial. Strong interpersonal skills foster a cooperative work environment and facilitate smooth operational processes.
  • Communication Skills: Clear and effective communication is essential for accurately relaying information about stock levels, discrepancies, and other critical issues. This ensures that all team members are informed and can act accordingly.

Duties:

  • Receipt of Stock: Responsible for receiving deliveries of non-pharmaceutical goods from suppliers. This task involves checking the stock against invoices to verify accuracy and completeness.
  • Inspection of Cartons: Upon delivery, open cartons and verify their contents against invoices. Check for expiry dates and batch numbers to ensure that the goods meet safety and quality standards.
  • External Appearance Check: Inspect the external condition of cartons for damage or inaccuracies. Identifying these issues early helps prevent the use of compromised items.
  • Delivery and Placement: Deliver finished, final, and packaged pharmaceutical items to designated areas within the hospital. Proper placement of items in their designated storage locations is critical for efficient access and use.
  • Upholding the Cold Chain: Ensure that temperature-sensitive items are stored correctly to maintain their efficacy. This involves monitoring storage conditions and managing the cold chain processes meticulously.
  • Assisting with Issuing Stock: Provide support to pharmacy staff with the issuing of stock. This includes helping with the preparation, packaging, and distribution of medications and other essential supplies.
  • Stock Taking: Conduct regular stock taking activities to maintain accurate inventory records. This includes checking stock levels, updating records, and ensuring that inventory is accurately tracked.
  • Maintenance of Cleanliness: Ensure that storage areas remain clean, tidy, and hygienic. Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness is vital for preventing contamination and ensuring a safe working environment.
  • Reporting Deviations: Report any deviations or discrepancies in stock or inventory to the appropriate authorities. Prompt reporting helps in addressing and resolving issues efficiently.
