Position Overview:

We are seeking a dedicated and customer-focused General Assistant to join our dynamic team. As a General Assistant, you will be an essential part of the store operations, responsible for delivering outstanding customer service, ensuring stock is well-merchandised, maintaining cleanliness and safety standards, and supporting day-to-day store functions. This role is ideal for individuals who are energetic, reliable, and passionate about retail and customer engagement.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Educational Qualifications:

    • Minimum of Grade 10 or NQF Level 3 with at least 1 year of relevant work experience, or

    • Grade 12 (Matric) with no prior experience required

  • Language Skills:

    • Proficient in English and the dominant language spoken in the store’s geographic area

  • Legal Documents:

    • Must possess a valid South African ID or a valid work permit

  • Numeracy:

    • Able to perform basic mathematical calculations accurately

  • Availability:

    • Must be willing and able to work shifts, including weekends, public holidays, and during peak trading hours

  • Work Ethic:

    • Ability to work under pressure, multitask, and maintain attention to detail


Key Responsibilities:

1. Customer Service Excellence

  • Act as the first point of contact for customers by offering assistance, guidance, and product knowledge

  • Proactively engage with customers to understand their needs and provide accurate information and solutions

  • Effectively handle customer inquiries and complaints in a polite and professional manner

  • Maintain a friendly, helpful, and approachable attitude at all times

2. Merchandising and Stock Display

  • Ensure stock is neatly and correctly merchandised in line with the store layout and planograms

  • Maintain an organized and visually appealing bulk stock area

  • Regularly replenish shelves, check for damaged items, and ensure products are front-facing and accessible

  • Ensure that all items are clearly and correctly priced

3. Store Housekeeping and Maintenance

  • Keep assigned areas clean, organized, and free of hazards

  • Make sure that aisles are unobstructed and safe for customers and staff to navigate

  • Participate in daily checklists for canteen, toilets/showers, and general store cleanliness

  • Quickly process and display new stock as it arrives to ensure immediate availability for customers

4. Safety and Compliance

  • Adhere to all Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) requirements and store safety policies

  • Ensure the use of appropriate safety gear (e.g. gloves, reflective vests) where applicable

  • Report any safety hazards, damaged fixtures, or non-compliant areas to the Store Manager promptly

  • Maintain a safe working and shopping environment for all

5. Stock Loss Prevention

  • Monitor and report damaged, expired, or missing stock

  • Take active steps to prevent theft, breakage, and loss of goods in your area

  • Notify the Store Manager of any suspicious behavior or inventory discrepancies

6. Performance and Results

  • Work towards and meet daily/weekly performance targets

  • Maintain a high level of accuracy and efficiency in completing assigned duties

  • Strive to uphold company standards in every task and show initiative in improving processes

7. Problem Solving and Decision-Making

  • Identify and resolve day-to-day operational issues using available information and team collaboration

  • Escalate more complex problems to the appropriate supervisor or manager

  • Make sound decisions that are consistent with company policies and procedures

8. Planning and Time Management

  • Organize tasks effectively to ensure all responsibilities are fulfilled within required timelines

  • Support the team during busy trading periods, such as promotions and month-end sales

9. Stress and Conflict Management

  • Remain calm, polite, and productive under stressful or high-pressure situations

  • Manage minor conflicts with customers or coworkers in a respectful and solution-oriented manner

10. Teamwork and Communication

  • Collaborate effectively with team members and management

  • Demonstrate courtesy and professionalism in all interactions

  • Communicate relevant information clearly and timely to stakeholders and co-workers
