Data Systems Intern (12 Months Internship)
Main Purpose Of The Job
- In order to maintain the Wits cluster system and help researchers and students access various data sets on the server and conduct analyses, install and configure hardware, software, and networks, monitor system performance and troubleshoot issues, and ensure security and efficiency of the systems infrastructure, a full-time dedicated systems administrator is needed.
Location:
- Parktown Johannesburg’s Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience (SBIMB) is located at 9 Jubilee Road.
Key Performance Areas
- Update systems with the latest models and releases.
- Keep an eye on performance and make necessary system maintenance
- Recognize and resolve technological problems
- Communicate with and acquaint new users with the cluster
- Create a user account and supply SOP for widespread usage.
- Assume responsibility and ownership for your work, and exhibit good
- self-management.
- Make sure you follow through to preserve the accuracy and consistency of your own work’s quality and productivity requirements.
- Retain a positive outlook and be receptive to criticism.
- Take charge of your own professional growth by engaging in regular training and development events like conferences, workshops, and forums.
Required Minimum Education And Training
- A minimum of a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or information technology, or the equivalent
Required Minimum Work Experience
- No prior work experience is necessary, but it would be advantageous to have programming and database skills, especially in a research setting.
Desirable Additional Education, Work Experience, And Personal Abilities
- shown proficiency with programming and systems/network administration
- Proficiency in writing Python scripts or other programming languages; practical understanding of databases, LANs, WANs, and patch administration
- familiarity with system security and data recovery/backup
- knowledgeable with a range of platforms and operating systems
- Experience with REDCap will be beneficial.
